You might have never heard of Echuca Moama before, but unbeknownst to you it is the perfect weekend or mid-week trip from Melbourne! Only a 3 hour drive from the Melbourne City Center, you'll see Kangaroos, Cockatoos, and Koalas along the way. The Echuca Moama tourism board makes it even easier by offering complete getaway packages!

Where to Stay

We highly recommend staying at The Paddock at Ulupna, a self contained cabin on a stunning riverfront wedding venue. Not only are there canoes for paddling onsite, but the property also used to be where they would hold koala viewing tours - so there are plenty onsite to keep you entertained, as well as wild kangaroos!

Places to Eat

To be quite honest, we had the most difficult time finding places to eat. After exploring during the day, most places in these cities along the Murray River Valley seemed to close right before dinner time. However, we were able to stop at a few (aka 2) places during our 3 days there that we would 100% recommend checking out. If you're looking to save some cash then we highly recommend stopping at a Woolsworth to grab some groceries! (The cabins at the Paddock at Ulupna have an entire kitchen!) We'll also include some other options in the area that came highly recommended.

Port 53 at Radcliffes - local eatery using what is seasonably available
Riverbank Moama - great views of the river serving breakfast, lunch and dinner
Beechworth Bakery Echuca - great coffee, cakes, and pastries
Bru Burger - burgers and beer :)
Hungry Goat Echuca - beautiful baked goods and grazing boxes
Murray River Tea Rooms - coffee, tea, and cold drinks
Revive Juice Bar - fresh presed juices, smoothies, and salads

Things to Do

If you haven't visited the area before, then you are in for a treat - there is so much to do in the Echuca Moama area that will surprise you! We've gathered our favorite things to do below - however if you're looking for something a bit different, make sure to check out Echuca Moama's Website Here for even more activities to explore during your trip!

Cactus Country - with over 60 years of growing experience, make sure to grab a drink before you explore the 12 acres of plants and cactus from around the world! (p.s. they have delicious nachos & dessert!)
River Paddlesteamers - we were unable to do this during our short stay, but we can guarantee the views will transport you to what many would picture as the backcountry of Louisiana and the Carolinas (try Echuca Paddlesteamers or Murray River Cruises)
Ulupna Island - an area to relax and explore, they have lakes, waterfront camping sites, and unique (large) cockatoo sculptures
Silo Art Trail - a unique driving trail covering different towns that have beautiful public art exhibits, 4 of which are on giant silos! The entire drive without stopping takes at least 4 hours, so we recommend making a day of it or breaking it up into 2 days!
Backyards Trail - another unique driving trail with interpretive signs along the way to share the areas heritage and how it's been shaped into what it is today. There are also plenty of local small businesses that you'll want to shop (sorry I meant stop ?) at!
Barmah National Park - formerly a state park, Barmah has plenty of walking trails along the winding rivers and waterways, it's also an excellent area to watch for Koalas and Kangaroos!
