Matanuska Glacier Tour - A Review

Basic Tour Information

Matanuska Glacier used to be open to the public, however now it is a requirement to get to the glacier via tour. We went through Glacier Tours on the Matanuska, although there are a few other tour operators for this glacier. To get there you will have to drive about 2.5 hours north on the Glen Highway Scenic Highway. We did our tour at the end of May!

The tour itself requires a little more exertion, and is about a 3 mile hike over 2-3 hours. Once you get past the entrance, you'll have to drive down a dirt road to their glacier station. Here they will provide helmets (required for everyone) and hiking poles to those who'd like them. After hiking to the glacier, you'll be given crampons to put onto your shoes to prevent any slipping on the glacier. The entire tour is narrated, and you'll be able to learn a lot about glaciers and why the rocks "walk." They'll even let you use/take home some of the glacial mud that is very beneficial for your skin!

Our tour to Matanuska Glacier was right around 3 hours, and cost $125 per person, or $40 for Alaska Residents (Alaska ID required at check in). Since then, we've heard prices have continued to rise.

Our Thoughts

Although we loved our tour at Matanuska, we really think it's a bit overpriced for out of state residents. (Considering it used to be free for the public just a few years ago.) However, we had a pretty fun tour and our guide was great! It's also an awesome opportunity to get out on a glacier if you haven't yet during your trip in Alaska! Personally, we like some of the other glaciers better, but you don't necessarily always get to walk on them like you do here, so if it's on your bucket list to get to a glacier then we 100% recommend!
