All About the Alaska Railroad
One more thing to make note of - no one is allowed to open the sides doors, and windows only open for emergencies, so no picturesque pictures of the side of the train. We were able to get some shots through the windows, but just like everything in Alaska they get dirty fast.
Overall, would we recommend a train ride on the Alaska Railroad? Honestly, no we wouldn't. For the price, you should be able to rent a car for half that - and this way you'll be able to stop and actually see the wildlife and take in the views on your own time. And if you're wondering if the views are worth it on the railroad - then yes, maybe - but they're the same views you'll see driving anywhere in Alaska, and the trees pretty much block your view of the mountains, lakes, and glaciers except for a minute or two here and there. The final reason we wouldn't recommend is because it is SO SLOW. We took the railroad from Anchorage to Seward, and it took us about 4.5 hours one way when it normally would take us about 2 hours to drive it - this really limits the time you have to explore if you're on vacation. We were happy we did it once, but we wouldn't do it again, it honestly just wasn't for us! If you do decide to book - we genuinely hope you enjoy and have the best time! Maybe you can convince us to try it out again one day! ;)
