Andorra is a small micro-state tucked away in the Pyrenees mountain range between Spain and France. At just 1/6 the size of Rhode Island, many people have sadly never heard of it before. If you're planning a stop, chances are you're either coming from Spain or France (well, you have to since there's no airports in Andorra) - and you might just have a few days to spend exploring this country. Lucky for you, we've gone ahead and created the perfect 2 - 3 day weekend itinerary to explore all the top sights of Andorra - the perfect add on to a vacation in the South of France or Catelonia region of Spain! We also highly recommend visiting Andorra in the summer to make the most of your trip!

An Andorra Road Trip (Day 1)

Picture
  • Breakfast - Load up on a fresh baked breakfast from Granier Bakery, and maybe bring a sandwich for lunch later. You can eat here or take your breakfast to go, just know that parking might be a little difficult during peak times.
  • Drive from Spain to France - Driving completely across a country might sound daunting, but in reality this is just a short 43 kilometers and with no stops would take about an hour each way. Of course, we recommend stopping at the beautiful sights along the way, keeping your eyes open for the wild horses that live here in the Pyranees Mountains, and stopping at old churches like Santa Coloma and Sant Joan de Caselles along the way.
  • Try McDonalds - Ok, this might sound silly but what better road trip food than McDonalds? Plus, the McDonalds in Andorra has some pretty unique items, like a goat cheese salad and loaded cheesy bacon fries, and they even sell beer! For those that aren't driving of course. ;)

Exploring the Andorran Outdoors (Day 2)

Picture
  • Breakfast - We recommend stopping at Santa Gloria Bakery - which has fresh baked items as well as fresh pressed juices and for most will be right on the way to Naturland - a.k.a. Tobotronc! Parking can be difficult, but you can eat in or take your meal to go!
  • Tobotronc - In case you haven't heard, Andorra has the world's longest alpine toboggan ride, and it's called Tobotronc. Located at a nature/outdoor recreational activity park called Naturland, we booked the Aventura tickets for 30 Euro that included most activities onsite (including Tobotronc) for the entire day. It's also worth noting that in order to ride Tobotronc you'll need close toed shoes, and nothing loose on you - no scarves, purses, sunglasses, phones, etc. Although the other activities onsite like ziplining, archery and skliding are all fun, we highly encourage you to try Tobotronc - you get to control the speed you go and the views are amazing! You can then spend the whole day or half a day here like we did! They also have a small cafe/restaurant where you can grab some snacks and drinks after adventuring!
  • Lake Engolasters - After fueling up, we recommend heading over to Lake Engolasters. A beautiful lake set in the mountains, the 2 kilometer hike is fairly easy and flat, and we think it can be accomplished by most people. Another great idea is bringing a picnic to this spot! Once you make it to the other side of the lake there is a large grassy area that would be perfect, it's just important to note that people are not allowed into the lake itself since it is used for Andorra's drinking water - that means no wading, swimming, kayaking, or any other water activities. If you're looking for some other, more challenging hikes to do, we recommend looking into Estanys de Tristaina (a 3.7 kilometer hike to a lake), Ruta del Ferro (easy 4 kilometer hike that ends at a metal mine and 2 old churches) and Estanys de Juclar (moderate 4 kilometer hike that ends at two lakes surrounded by mountains).
  • Taste the Local Cuisine - Before you leave Andorra, chances are you'll want to at least try the local cuisine. At least we did, and we found that Malandra is one of the best restaurants in town. Although you typically need reservations to get seated, we were able to go in for an early dinner and beat the rush - which we were so thankful for. Located inside a traditional borda, or mountain house, Malandra serves an incredible cod fish and duck magret plates. We highly recommend trying it out for yourself!

The Extra Day

Picture
  • Relax at Caldea Thermal Spa - Unfortunately we weren't able to do this ourselves, but saw signs all around town advertising this family friendly thermal spa. At $50 per person for their cheapest pass (early morning), you can choose to indulge in their adults only section or even purchase multi day passes for your entire trip.
  • Go Shopping - Andorra is known as a shopping hub, mainly because of the tax-free luxury shopping opportunities. Even though we aren't much of shoppers ourselves, it was fun seeing everyone walking around with all their shopping bags enjoying the day! If you're looking to stock up on some high end items this is a great way to save hundreds of dollars.
  • Grab some Gelato - End your trip with a stop at La Gelateria, conveniently located near the shopping street in Andorra la Vella. This was the only ice cream shop we saw on our entire trip to Andorra, so of course it had to make our list!
