Voyageur Canoe Outfitters on Minnesota's Gunflint Trail(My Honest Resort Review)

10/22/2025

As some of the last ares of Minnesota with untouched wilderness and chance wildlife encounters, the Gunflint Trail is one of our favorite places to explore. If you're planning a visit then you're undoubtedly looking for a place to stay. Voyageur Canoe Outfitters is located right on the Gunflint and has direct access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. From incredible hikes, wildlife, views, and fishing right in their backyard, you might be wondering if a stay in one of their cabins or yurts is worth it.

Our Essential Travel Resources :
There are plenty of travel companies, but these are my favorite websites and resources for planning an unforgettable trip. This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

For flights, we recommend Hopper to compare the cheapest travel dates.

Car rentals comparisons are best through Discover Cars - just make sure to bring your international driver's permit with you!

We always use Expedia's easy to use platform for hotels.

To keep cell service while traveling internationally, we always use Airalo’s
easy eSIM’s (no installation required), and NordVPN to stay safe while connecting to different wifi.

For fun things to do, we always recommend Viator to find the best tours in the area, otherwise Get Your Guide also does the trick.

Just in case, Safetywing is the insurance I always use for travel insurance.

Lastly, my packing list for any international or domestic travels.

Voyageur Canoe Outfitters is a resort and outfitters station located near the end of the Gunflint Trail. Open all year round, they offer amenities for summer guests - like portaging, canoeing, hiking, fishing - and winter guests as well - like cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. Voyageur Canoe Outfitter (VCO) is located on both sides of the Seagull River, and you can use their canoes onsite to access the land on the other side of the river. Their main office, bathhouse, bunkhouses, and two cabins are located on mainland, while their sauna, bath house, 5 cabins and Black Bear Cabin are located across the river.

Included with a cabin rental is the use of an aluminum canoe for your entire trip! They also include use of their life jackets, paddles, and maps. Although there is no cell service or Wi-Fi in the cabins, you can use the onsite wifi when in the main lodge & office building. While their staff lives onsite, so does a friendly dog named Bosley! Upon check in they provided us with a welcome basket, and a guide book including all their recommend spots for hiking, fishing, and canoeing.

My Honest Voyageur Canoe Outfitters Review

Voyageur Canoe Outfitters is truly a wilderness cabin and resort - and although they're super cozy and we loved our remote stay, they aren't going to have all the modern amenities that other cabins along the North Shore might. However, if we're being honest we would 100% recommend booking a stay here if you're looking to enjoy the outdoors. Because they're located right on the Gunflint Trail, all the best wildlife, hiking, fishing, and canoeing are literally right at your front porch while you stay.

Our cabin itself was cozy, had all the amenities we needed, and was extra spacious. They even had games and books for us to enjoy during our stay. Not to mention the staff was so kind we truly can't wait to go back one day. We definitely recommend staying with Voyageur Outfitters if you're looking to explore the North Shore and Gunflint Trail areas!
